SCOOP : Bay of Plenty pips reigning champion, becoming NZ's TOP ice cream-licking region

Tip Top has named New Zealand's top-15 ice cream 'high-rollers', who roll over 1 million scoops a year between them - SEE LIST

After the best part of a decade at the top of New Zealand's ice-cream-scoops-per-capita rankings, Nelson Marlborough Tasman is handing the crown to Bay of Plenty this summer

The news comes as hundreds of dairies, ice cream parlours and food stores around the country get ready to roll for $1 SCOOP DAY - an annual ice cream event run by scoop outlets, and supported by Tip Top, to celebrate the start of summer during Labour Weekend.

Each participating store nominates Saturday, Sunday or Monday of Labour Weekend to sell every scoop of Tip Top ice cream for just one dollar throughout the day. Click here for the list of participating $1 SCOOP DAY outlets and their nominated $1 SCOOP DAY.

Kiwis around the country polished off a total of 17.1 million scoops of Tip Top ice cream in a cone from neighbourhood dairies, parlours and food stores in the past year. Bay of Plenty devoured 1.7 million scoops, Nelson Marlborough Tasman 856,000, and the combined Manawatu Taranaki region 2.1 million scoops. Auckland tucked into 4.3 million scoops in 2009, but on a per-capita basis the largest city was licked by the rest of the country.

Fifteen top scoop outlets have been named 2009's ice cream high-rollers. They range from scoop legends like Ollies in Auckland, to 'comeback' success stories like Hamilton Lake's Verandah Cafe where new owners are re-writing the venue's scoop history, to newcomers like the Farmhouse Cafe in Whangarei which opened in July this year and already employs eleven staff.

Bethlehem Four Square in Tauranga has been named Bay of Plenty's ice cream high-roller, and the store's Kelvin Gregg welcomes the news that Bay of Plenty is now the scoop capital of New Zealand. "There have been times when I've thought I'd hang up my scoop, but I won't be doing that now! We have customers who have been coming here for ice creams for over 40 years," he says. Bethlehem Four Square is running $1 SCOOP DAY on Sunday 25th October.

Nelson's ice cream high-roller is the Black Cat Super Seven Dairy. Owner Ray Murray says: "We are the sunshine capital of New Zealand, and with less than a teaspoon of ice cream between the top two in the rankings, I'm sure we'll win back the scoop title next summer!" Black Cat Super Seven Dairy is also running their $1 SCOOP DAY on Sunday 25th October.

Tip Top's newest SCOOP flavours this summer are Creamy Strawberry Yoghurt Ice Cream, Creamy Vanilla Yoghurt Ice Cream and Mint Cookie Smash Ice Cream.
